Fashion & Clothing

The fashion and clothing industry is heavily impacted by counterfeiting, with the global trade in fake clothing and textiles estimated at $27.7 billion in 2013, according to a study by the OECD and EUIPO. This represents over 11% of global trade in clothing and textile fabrics, making the industry the third most affected by counterfeiting in terms of percentage of world imports within the product category and the fifth most affected in terms of value. Counterfeit products can damage the reputation of genuine brands, as consumers may blame the real manufacturer if the fake product does not meet their expectations. This is further exacerbated by the fact that 78% of web users trust online reviews as much as recommendations from friends and family. Luxury brands are particularly affected by online counterfeiting, with an estimated loss of $30.3 billion.
